Felix
I awoke this morning, and for the first
time since the death of my beloved pet cockatiel, Felix, I fried an egg.
While this may not seem like a remarkable event to most people, for me it
was yet another alteration of my usual daily routines that reminded me a
good friend was no longer with me. See, Felix loved scrambled eggs.
On many mornings at the sound of the first cracking shell, she would
emerge from her egg laying nest (an old Diet Pepsi box), fly to the top of
the cupboard next to the stove, then promptly land on my shoulder, letting
me know that she had first dibs. As anyone who has lost a valued pet
knows, it's the simple routines you shared with your pet that you miss the
most. I also miss the noises she used to make.
Who knows how many times I told her to be quiet when she squawked at the
top of her little lungs letting me know it was time for me to stop
whatever I was doing and pet her, or in the mornings the second I awoke-I
swear she could hear me roll over in bed. When I returned home in the
afternoons, I could always count on a loud and boisterous welcome from my
friend, Felix. Ironic how much I miss that noise now. She was a
sweet, warm and colorful personality that will be missed deeply. Felix,
may all your eggs hatch in heaven, where I hope to see you again
someday-and until then don't forget to visit me in my dreams...
